Gebhard Mehring (born October 26, 1864 in Vorbachzimmer , Oberamt Mergentheim , † October 10, 1931 in Stuttgart ) was a German archivist and Württemberg state historian.

Live and act

After receiving his doctorate in Tübingen in 1889 as Dr. phil. Mehring joined the Württemberg Commission for State History in 1894 as a research assistant. In 1901 he switched to the archives service, but was only promoted slowly there (he was only appointed senior government councilor in 1929).

Mehring presented numerous editions and source studies, primarily on the medieval history of Württemberg. Together with the librarian Karl Steiff (1846–1914) he published the historical songs and sayings of Württemberg (completed in 1915).

Mehring designed a complete inventory of the tradition in the Württemberg state archives, from which the "Württemberg Regests" were realized.

His estate in the main state archive in Stuttgart contains numerous excerpts from archival materials destroyed during World War II.
