use
All Umbrasorten must powdered before use and sludges are exempt from sandy parts when they are not. They are used very frequently for all kinds of paints, both as oil and water-based paints, for dark varnishes, particularly frequently in oilcloth manufacture, for browning wood, for gilding grounds, and in decorative cosmetics.
Shadow painting
Color mixtures with umber are used to represent shadows - in painting, as well as in facade painting for shadow effects. For this purpose, the color of the object is mixed with umber to represent the shadow of this object. Example: The shade of a red dress would be created with a mixture of the same red and umber. Or: the façade surface of a building that is not exposed to light is painted with a mixture of main color and umber.
