history

In 1998 ZDF started a collection of interviews from people about their experiences in the 20th century . A bus (“bus of the century”) was used to drive through Germany to reach people directly. Around 6000 conversations were recorded, which form the basis of the work of the Our History association founded in 2006 by Guido Knopp and Hans-Ulrich Jörges . Build the nation's memory . However, Jörges cites the documentation of memories of Holocaust survivors by the Shoah Foundation as the trigger for the establishment .

Since October 2011 a “bus of the century” has been on the road again, in which contemporary witnesses are asked about their memories in order to record German history in the form of video interviews and to keep it permanently on the Internet for future generations, especially for schools and universities. The portal started on October 6, 2011, and since then the “bus of the century”, which was set up as a TV studio, has been traveling through Germany to interview contemporary witnesses. First Christian Wulff was the project's patron, then Joachim Gauck . The Minister of State for Culture a. D. Bernd Neumann was chairman of the board of trustees.
