The museum memorial in the "Round Corner" is a museum located in the former headquarters of the District Administration for State Security on Dittrichring in Leipzig, about the history, structure and functioning of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) in the GDR .

history

The building was built from 1911 to 1913 as a commercial building for Alte Leipziger Feuerversicherung according to plans by the architects Hugo Licht and Karl Poser together with the Weidenbach & Tschammer office. After American troops moved into the city in 1945, the US Army used the building for a few months, after which it was used by the Interior Ministry of the Soviet Union (NKVD) and the MfS forerunner K5 . From 1950 to 1989 this was the seat of the District Administration for State Security (BVfS). Around 1984 the building was expanded to include a large annex and a non-visible inner courtyard. On the evening of December 4, 1989, demonstrators occupied the facility as part of the Monday demonstrations .

Todays use

Since August 1990 the "Runde Ecke" has housed the permanent exhibition "Stasi - Power and Banality". The responsible body is the Citizens Committee Leipzig e. V. The building is also used by the Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the Former German Democratic Republic (BStU) as a branch in Leipzig to process and archive the state security files in Leipzig. The inventory is about ten running kilometers of files. During the Wave-Gotik-Treffen , special exhibitions to monitor Gothic culture in the GDR are shown.

In 2014 the Citizens Committee Leipzig e. V., with the museum memorial in the "Runde Ecke", took over the editing of the history magazine Horch und Guck , which had previously been published in Berlin .
