General

The monument was erected for St. Elisabeth of Thuringia in memory of a legend . The communities of Gödewitz and Salzmünde were the donors of the memorial stone . The memorial stone on the beer hill of Salzmünde is already inscribed on maps from the late 19th century ; it was probably created after 1865.

inscription

The inscriptions are no longer fully legible due to weathering, an information board from the State Office for Archeology is not only dedicated to the history of the memorial stone, but also completely reproduces the inscription. It is:

The Palatine and Landgravine of Thuringia, Elisabeth the Holy, the Hungarian king's daughter, the grateful communities of Goedewitz and Salzmünde. She made neighboring villages happy with great benefits that will remain unforgettable in the mouths of the people, and on the day of Ascension in 1222 she founded a celebration on this site in memory of which you show love and admiration. The place which a good person has entered is consecrated, after centuries his words and deeds of grandchildren resound again. It is blissful to see who sow the seeds here for golden seeds. Happy who dedicates his life to noble deeds. Its star will never fade, its memory will persist.

legend

In 1222, the 15-year-old Elisabeth of Thuringia made her way alone from Landsberg Castle to Eisenach , where she spent the night in the Hüneburg. After paying homage to the villagers in the surrounding villages, she waived their tithe . The only thing she asked for in return was “seven ring buckets of beer” on Ascension Day . In the 19th century, Friedrich Boltze, Johann Gottfried Boltze's brother, suspected that this meant a barrel with seven iron rings.

The place was named Bierhügel and since then a festival has been celebrated every year in honor of Elisabeth on Men's Day , with a barrel of free beer.
