history
The prison already existed during the Indonesian occupation (1974-1999). Becora was built in 1986 as a "more humane" prison to relieve the overcrowded Comarca prison .
On August 30, 2006, Alfredo Reinado , one of the most important protagonists during the unrest in East Timor that year , managed to escape from prison together with 56 other prisoners. They had threatened the guards with lawn shears, who then opened the doors. Afterwards, the refugees used the visiting hours to escape from the prison. The other 148 inmates did not flee.
On November 3, 2013, there was another mass escape from Becora prison. 24 of the more than 350 inmates escaped. After Sunday mass, they knocked down two guards and fled through the main entrance. Among them were two former pro-Indonesian militia officers and convicted murderers, rapists and thieves. 13 of the fugitives were recaptured within a very short time. Except for two in the following days, the others too.
