Mazas prison

The Mazas prison (fr. Prison de Mazas ) was a prison opened in Paris in 1850 , near the local train station, the Gare de Lyon . On an area of approximately 130  ha in 1199 cells were housed in six buildings, each 3.85 times 1.85 m tall. On May 19, 1850 841 prisoners from the Prison de la Force were transferred there.

In 1863, Georges Clemenceau was imprisoned there for political reasons. There were numerous political prisoners during the Paris Commune ; on January 22, 1871, the prison was stormed unsuccessfully. Other Paris Commune insurgents, including Arthur Rimbaud and Henri Rochefort , were later detained in Mazas prison .

In 1900 the prison was destroyed.
