San Antonio Prison

The San Antonio Prison ( Spanish Prisión de San Antonio ) is a Venezuelan prison.

The institution is located on Isla Margarita , which is off Venezuela , about eight kilometers west of the provincial capital Porlamar .

history

It was built between 1980 and 1984 for 550 occupants. It currently has over 2000 prisoners. In 2011, The New York Times reported that inmates had a swimming pool and that female visitors were constantly walking in and out. Many inmates in the prison are said to have heavy weapons. Many foreign prisoners are there for drug trafficking.
