Porlamar is a city on the Venezuelan island of Margarita . It is the largest city and the economic center of the island.
history
In 1526, the governor Isabel Manrique sent the envoys Pedro de Villardiga and Pedro Alegría to Margarita to build a fortress in the Bay of Guaragua. Around 1536, the priest Francisco de Villacorta founded the village of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción nearby. In 1545 the fortress was ready. The village was destroyed by pirates in 1555 and by Lope de Aguirre in 1561. The residents moved to the Santa Lucía Valley, where La Asunción would now arise. What remained was a settlement known as Puerto de la Mar or Puerto Viejo. From this the village of Porlamar slowly developed.

Porlamar has its own Isla de Margarita international airport , near which is the San Antonio prison .
