A guided motor coach , also Triebbeiwagen , Beitriebwagen , motorized sidecar or motorized trailers called, is a tram - railcars that never in the first place a trainset runs. For this reason - like classic sidecars - it either has no driver's cab at all or only has an auxiliary driver's cab for maneuvering in the depot . Sometimes guided railcars do not have a pantograph either , in this case the power is supplied via a high-voltage cable from the leading vehicle . Motorized sidecars are always one-way vehicles .

With the use of guided railcars, the respective transport company can reduce its procurement and operating costs, for example the latest point control, signal software or safety technology does not have to be retrofitted. For this reason, older railcars, in particular, often run in a guided manner in their final years of operation, after conversions that were only carried out on leading vehicles were canceled. Another advantage is the greater transport capacity due to the omitted driver's cab. Furthermore, there is no need for complete front lighting , windshield wipers or the line or destination display.

On the other hand, the more cumbersome operation is disadvantageous, because train sets with service vehicles, unless they are equipped with an auxiliary driver's cab, can only be joined or separated in the depot. In addition, guided railcars cannot be used flexibly because they cannot run on their own in regular service.
