In addition to the basic type Be 4/6 , the vehicle family includes other types of driverless service vehicles, the Be 4/6 and Be 2/4, as well as the partially low-floor Be 4/8 resulting from the conversion .

history

Be 4/8 «sedan chair», here still without a matrix target indicator. Tram 2000 has stopped running on line 10 since the Glattalbahn opened .

The Tram 2000 was developed to modernize the fleet of the Zurich tram company as the successor to the Be 4/6 “Mirage” . In contrast to the previous model, the six-axle articulated wagons in the Tram 2000 have only one joint that rests on a Jakobs bogie .

Between 1976 and 1978 45 six-axle articulated multiple units (Be 4/6) with a driver's cab and 15 without a driver's cab were initially purchased. Another 53 Be 4/6 followed in a second acquisition between 1985 and 1987, although 20 four-axle open-plan cars (Be 2/4) were added to the inventory as driver's cab-free vehicles, which were nicknamed "Pony". Since the engine of the first series had proven to be too weak, the vehicles of the second series were fitted with more powerful engines. As a third series, a further 23 Be 4/6 and 15 Be 2/4 were procured from 1991 to 1992. The cab-less wagons can only be used in double traction as a second wagon behind the usual Be 4/6, but for maneuvering in the depot they are equipped with auxiliary cabs at the front and rear.

In order to increase capacity and to discuss the newly purchased from 2001 Be 5/6 "Cobra" also low floor to provide access points, a test carrier from the year 1999, after modification between 2004 and 2005 every 23 Be 4/6 of the third series to a low-floor middle section is expanded, which rests on another Jakobs bogie. The drive power remained unchanged, so that these railcars have a lower acceleration capacity than their sister vehicles. The converted vehicles are known as the Be 4/8 and are known by the nickname «sedan chair».

Similar vehicles

The Bern – Solothurn regional traffic has been operating the Bern – Worb Dorf railway with similar vehicles since 1987 . However, these were delivered with eight axles and are bidirectional vehicles . In 2009 and 2010 they were extended by a low-floor segment and are now ten-axle. The type FB 2000 of the Forchbahn and the carriages of the Neuchâtel tram have similarities in construction, but are not articulated vehicles, are wider and have different electrical and pneumatic equipment.
