Sremska Mitrovica prison camp
The Sremska Mitrovica prison camp was located in Sremska Mitrovica , Serbia , during the Croatian War . Mostly Croatian and other non-Serbian prisoners of war and civilians were held in the camp by Serbian troops. The prison camp existed from November 1991 to August 1992. At least 25 prisoners are said to have been murdered in front of witnesses , others were tortured and beaten, and rape is said to have been committed.
The warehouse
Around 3,000 to 4,000 people were held in the camp. It was located in the center of Sremska Mitrovica and consisted of a building surrounded by a four meter high wall and barbed wire. The main building was 60–70 meters long and 8 meters wide.
The war
During Croatia War the city was Vukovar by the Yugoslav People's Army and Serbian paramilitaries after the Battle of Vukovar conquered. After taking the city, 260 people were murdered in the Vukovar massacre. Most of the prisoners were transferred to Sremska Mitrovica, 75 kilometers to the east.
First official mention of the camp
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) first visited the camp on December 2, 1991.
