The flamed moth ( Endotricha flammealis ) is a butterfly from the family of the moth .
features
The flamed pod has a wingspan of 17 to 23 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings is ocher, orange-red to dark purple-red to dark brown. The dark form is also called f. adustalis , the mostly rarer, light ocher form as f. lutealis . The root and fringing field is separated from the central field by a brownish-edged, light, slightly curved, slightly jagged cross line. The front wings, whose front edge is dotted white, have a black spot in the middle field. The fringes on the apex are whitish. The antennae of the male are comparatively short and ciliate; the antennae of the female are simple and thread-like.
Way of life
The moths fly from mid-May to September. They hide during the day and only become active during twilight. They are often observed in artificial light sources and can be attracted with sugary baits. The eggs are laid on the underside of the leaves of the food plants of the caterpillars. The caterpillars can be seen from August to September. The young caterpillars , which are brown in color, initially live in web chambers on the underside of the leaves . From around October they change near the ground and feed on fallen leaves of oaks and willows . The caterpillars can also be found on herbs such as horn clover ( lotus ), ormennige ( Agrimonia ) and blueberries ( Vaccinium ). Pupation takes place in a cocoon on the ground.
Occurrence and distribution
This moth lives in deciduous forests and oak bushes, on the edges of forests and on meadows. It is native to almost all of Europe with the exception of Northern Europe. In the north the distribution area extends to Denmark and southern Sweden. The species has not yet been proven in Ireland either. In the south, the distribution area extends from North Africa across the Middle East, the Caucasus to Kazakhstan.
