Geiss is a farming village in the Lucerne hinterland. It belongs to the political municipality Menznau in the Willisau office of the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland .

history

In the 20th century Roman coins were found in Geiss, a forest road is still called Roman road today, and the name "Geiss" (otherwise denoting a female animal in German) could have been derived from the Roman word "casa", which means house or hut means. This evidence suggests that Geiss already existed on one of the Roman traffic routes in Roman times.

The statement that the Alemanni settled Geiss is then confirmed . This conclusion allows the farm name Elswil , which clearly has Alemannic roots.

In the Middle Ages, Geiss was under the Lords of Wolhusen . They lived in the castles there, of which there are still remains. The place of jurisdiction for the Messrs. Von Wolhusen was in Buholz, and very close by, on Geisser Boden, was the gallows on which criminals were hanged. This gallows still existed in 1800.

The Middle Ages can be described as the real heyday of Geiss. Thanks to its convenient location, Geiss is located on the Way of St. James , which attracted whole host of pilgrims in the Middle Ages, the village gained income and reputation. A splendid parish church could be built, which was consecrated to St. Jacob the Elder , the village received market rights and even had lower jurisdiction.

In 1650 the village was repeatedly torn into the turmoil of the peasant war . The anger of the rural population against the townspeople and their customs policy, the devaluation of money and the increase in bridge tariffs also manifested itself in Geiss, and the population expressed their displeasure.

With the decline in the stream of pilgrims, the additional source of income for the rural population gradually dried up, and the village of Geiss became more and more a sedate farming village with arable land. This yield was increased during the Second World War when the Geisser Moos was drained. The drainage was done by removing the peat, which was considered valuable fuel during the war. Drainage was laid with the peat extraction, and today the Geissermoos is entirely used for agricultural production.

Current situation

Today the village has around 500 inhabitants, is still strongly characterized by agriculture and still forms its own parish. In the village the pupils are taught from the 1st to the 6th primary grade. In addition to a few smaller businesses, there is a cheese dairy that processes the milk into Emmental cheese. In 2006, the Emmentaler produced by Jules Stampfli's creator in Geiss was awarded the "Peak of Quality" award. And in 2012 the success was confirmed. Jules Stampfli again won a gold medal with the Emmentaler.

Parish

The parish of St. Jakobus Geiss is a small, lively rural parish. Geiss was first mentioned in 1225 and therefore has an eventful history. Geiss is an important stage on the cultural and pilgrimage route, which was reopened in 1999, the so-called «Jakobsweg». The parish church of St. James and its surroundings, renovated in 1993/97, are cultural assets of national importance.
