The yellow-bellied sparrow ( Passer flaveolus ) is a member of the sparrow family , which only occurs in back India .

Appearance

The birds are only 14 centimeters tall and have dark brown back plumage and their belly is yellowish. They have an elongated black spot under the throat and around the eyes. The beak is shiny gray in color. The feet are black.

Occurrence

The populations of this bird species can be found in Cambodia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar , Thailand and Vietnam .

Way of life

The birds follow human culture and occur in gardens and plantations. They feed mainly on the seeds of various plants, including grain .

Reproduction

The female lays her three to seven eggs in a spherical nest that she has built herself from grass. The incubation period is 15 to 24 days. The boys are nestled and are looked after by both parents.

Danger

The IUCN classifies this species as not endangered due to its wide distribution ( Least Concern ).

Etymology and history of research

Edward Blyth described the yellow-bellied sparrow under the current protonym Passer flaveolus . Even if the article in The journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal shows the year 1844 as the year of publication, the article was only published in 1845. Therefore, the year 1845 is considered the year of the first description.

Passer is the Latin word for sparrow, sparrow . Also flaveolus is of Latin origin and comes from the word flavus for golden, yellow from.
