The Yellow-headed balsam-blade tensioner ( Ecliptopera capitata ), also Gelbleibiger Balsam tensioner or balsams-blade tensioner called, is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the tensioner (Geometridae).

The moths reach a wingspan of about 20 to 25 millimeters. The forewings show an alternation of different colored bandages. A typical wing drawing consists of the following color sequence: The basal region is dark gray to black-brown and is bordered by a narrow light band in which there are often dark arrow spots. The broad disk region is black-brown, the post- disk region yellowish to light brown and provided with a few distinct arrow spots near the front edge. One or two points protrude in the middle into the disk region and sometimes continue as orange-colored lines to the outer edge. Below the apex is a dark, crescent-shaped spot on the outer edge. The hind wings shimmer white-gray and are provided with a dark transverse line. The color of the head, thorax and abdomen, which ranges from yellow to orange-brown, is typical of the species .

Adult caterpillars are very slender and have a greenish-yellow basic color. The back line is weak and dark green in color, the thin side lines are yellowish. The red-brown sternum is striking.

The doll is yellow-brown and shows a dark brown vertical stripe on the front and back.

Similar species

The moths of the brown balsam moth ( Ecliptopera silaceata ) are on average larger than Ecliptopera capitata with a wingspan of 24 to 30 millimeters and differ in particular by their overall darker appearance, some whitish lines in the disk field, more arrow spots in the post-disk region and their brown color of the head, thorax, and abdomen.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The distribution area of ​​the yellow-headed balsam leaf tensioner covers most of Central Europe and extends eastward through Russia and Siberia to Japan and north to southern Fennoscandinavia . However, it is absent in the British Isles and Greece. The species prefers shady, partially shaded or moist places in deciduous, floodplain and mixed forests.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths mainly fly in the months of May to August. Sometimes specimens of a rare second generation appear in September. You visit artificial light sources . Forage plant of the caterpillars is the great balsam ( Impatiens noli-tangere ), which is also known under the name "Don't touch me". The pupa hibernates.
