The Atlantic yellow-nosed albatross ( Thalassarche chlororhynchos ) is a bird art from the family of albatrosses (Diomedeidae). It is believed that the yellow-nosed albatross is responsible for the seed dispersal of Phylica arborea between Amsterdam Island and Gough Island , which are 7200 km apart. It is also called the Atlantic yellow-nosed albatross .
Appearance
With a body length of 76 centimeters and a body weight of 2.5 kilograms, the yellow-nosed albatross is the smallest albatross that lives in the southern seas.
Yellow-nosed albatrosses have black and white body plumage. The black beak has a yellow rim and a yellow tip. The birds mainly live on cuttlefish and fish . They show no sexual dimorphism and both parent birds are involved in the care of their chick, which flies after about four months.
Spread and endangerment
Like most albatross species, the yellow-nosed albatross occurs in the Southern Ocean . Although there are still 58,000 specimens of the yellow-nosed albatross, the species is listed as critically endangered on the Red List of Threatened Species (cf. Wandering Albatross Diomedea exulans , 26,000 specimens).
