The yellow-headed bulbul ( Pycnonotus zeylanicus ) is a songbird native to Southeast Asia.
features
The 28 cm long yellow-crowned bulb has black stripes on the eyes and cheeks and a white throat on the straw-yellow head. The back and tail are dark brown, the wings are colored ash gray, the wings of the hand are lined with olive-green feathers. The chest and sides of the body are brownish to gray, the underside is gray. The beak is black, the feet are lead gray, the iris brownish-red. When excited, it rests on its short, stiff forehead feathers. The sexes are similar. The female is smaller. The singing of the females is limited to joining in with the singing performed aloud by the males, or to continue it briefly.
Occurrence
The distribution area is on the islands of Sumatra , Borneo and Java , but also in Malaysia and Thailand . There he lives in the undergrowth and the bushes of the light bank forest near the water.
behavior
The Gelbscheitelbülbül lives in small groups of four or five birds, sometimes more. It feeds on fruits , especially berries . It also eats insects that it does not hunt in flight, but picks from the foliage or prey on the ground.
Reproduction
The Gelbscheitelbülbül breeds all year round. Two to three eggs are laid in a bowl-shaped nest made of roots, leaves and twigs on low branches of trees and bushes, from which the young birds hatch after 16 days of breeding.
Others
Because of its melodious, trilling voice, the yellow-headed bulbül is often kept in cages and is therefore often illegally caught. That is why it has become rare in most areas.
