The common wallpapering spider ( Atypus affinis ) is a species of spider from the family of wallpapering spiders . It is widespread from North Africa to Denmark. It was named Spider of the Year 2013 by the Arachnological Society (AraGes) .

Mark

Atypus affinis is solid black or brown. The males are 7 to 9 mm long, while females can grow to 10 to 15 mm. It differs from the other two native atypical species by its clearly three-part posterior spinneret.

Distribution area of Atypus affinis

The distribution area includes Europe from Portugal to Ukraine and from Sweden to Greece and North Africa and the Caucasus . In Great Britain it is the only species in the genus Atypus .

Way of life

Their habitat is mostly rocky slopes in dry pine forests or heathland. The catch hose is approx. 13 to 17 cm long, the underground living hose 20 to 45 cm.

The young are sexually mature at around four years of age. The mating season is in autumn. The males go in search of a female webbed and then live there together until the male dies shortly after mating. The young hatch the following summer. Females live up to eight years.
