The non-profit theater and concert association Erlangen (gVe) is the oldest citizens' initiative in Erlangen .

It was founded in 1876 by citizens of the city and members of the Friedrich-Alexander University to organize concert and theater life. The gVe has been working closely with the city of Erlangen since the beginning.

The first activity of the gVe was the repair and management of the Erlangen Margrave Theater (built 1715–1719, rebuilt 1743/44). In addition, the gVe maintained the musical life and organized art exhibitions until the 1960s. In 1937 the association dissolved before the Nazi organization "Kraft durch Freude" was able to take it over. The association was re-established on December 2, 1945. After the theater had to be closed in 1956 due to dilapidation, the gVe secured the preservation of this important late-baroque theater building, which is today the oldest baroque theater in southern Germany. From the reopening at the end of 1959 to 1989, the gVe organized a successful guest performance in the Markgrafentheater on behalf of the city.

Today, the gVe primarily acts as a national concert organizer. Each season, orchestras and soloists perform as part of 14 subscription concerts in Erlangen's Heinrich-Lades-Halle (around 1200 seats). In addition, the association organizes piano evenings, family concerts and its own series of contemporary music at different performance locations within Erlangen.

In addition to its musical assignment, the association invites you to cultural trips at home and abroad under expert guidance: guided city trips, exhibitions on art or history or excursions to operas and concerts at home and abroad.
