The Community School Saarbrücken-Dudweiler ( by 2012 Comprehensive School Sulzbachtal ) is an integrated comprehensive school with team-small-group model in Saarbrücken District Dudweiler . It was founded in 1986 as the first school of its kind in Saarland. Pupils can acquire the secondary school leaving certificate after grade 9 and the intermediate educational qualification after grade 10. In addition, there is the possibility of taking the Abitur in the upper level of the gymnasium located in the house, which is operated in cooperation with the community school Quiigart and Sulzbach, so that all general school qualifications are offered there. With around 1,100 students, it is one of the largest secondary schools in Saarland, alongside the Gymnasium am Rotenbühl (Saarbrücken) and the Technical and Scientific Gymnasium Saarlouis .

history

Old mill school building

The school was founded in 1986 on the initiative of the then state government under Prime Minister Oskar Lafontaine under the name Gesamtschule Sulzbach . The first class was accommodated in the premises of the primary school Melinschule in the city of Sulzbach Saar , which was also responsible for the school at the beginning. Other years were accommodated in the former Vopeliusgymnasium and in the Weiherwiesschule in Sulzbach-Neuweiler, so that the school was spread over three different locations. However, this was not a permanent solution for the foreseeable future. In 1991 the school moved to its current location in the Saarbrücken district of Dudweiler . For this purpose, the former new school building of the mill school and the district secondary school was renovated. In addition, the sponsorship went from the city of Sulzbach to the sponsorship of the then Saarbrücken city association (today Saarbrücken regional association ) and the name was changed to Sulzbachtal comprehensive school . In addition, new educational concepts such as working in table groups, project learning with the democratic participation of learners and the use of new media were introduced, tested and further developed for the time.

In 1994, the second old school building, which until then housed classes of the former mill school, which was still running out, was also taken over. In 2004, further redesign work began in the building. A cafeteria was set up. In addition, a third building was added, which, among other things, accommodates afternoon care and another computer room.

As part of the community school introduced by the Jamaica coalition , the school has been officially named community school Saarbrücken-Dudweiler since 2012 .

differentiation

The most important pedagogical feature has been the model of differentiation in the lower and middle grades since the beginning. In grades 5 and 6, all subjects are initially taught as a class. From grade 7 onwards, the subjects German, mathematics, first foreign language, physics and chemistry are gradually differentiated into basic, extension and advanced courses, which, with the appropriate qualifications, enable them to be admitted to the main school, intermediate or general higher education courses. However, the class association remains up to and including grade 9 for other subjects (e.g. music, art and sport). In addition, the students in grades 7 and 9 choose so-called "compulsory elective areas", which are also taught differently.

Team small group model

Another special feature is the team small group model , in which teachers are assigned to corresponding year teams . These are located near the classrooms of the respective year in so-called team rooms decentralized, so that a clear structure is available for the students. It is also customary for each class to be led by two class teachers (tutors), if possible one teacher and one teacher.

The upper school level

In the 1992/1993 school year, the first year started the in-house upper secondary school. In the 1994/1995 school year, the first 25 students successfully passed the Abitur exams. A big advantage for the community schools in Saarland is the fact that this federal state provides central final exams for all school-leaving qualifications, including the Abitur , so that the conditions at the grammar school or the in-house upper secondary school were the same at the beginning. Meanwhile, the only difference is that with the introduction of the G8 , the Abitur is now taken after the 12th school year and thus after 8 years, while pupils at the community school still take the Abitur after nine years. From 1997 to 2015, the upper school level was developed in cooperation with the Bellevue Community School in Saarbrücken. Since 2015, the Ludwigspark Community School has been added to this cooperation. Since the 2018/2019 school year, the school has been running its upper level together with community schools in Sulzbach and Qui Various.

Specialized in computer science

In the first few years the school developed a technical focus in the field of computer science. In this context, the Sulzbachtal comprehensive school was the first school in Saarland to receive internet access in 1995 via the German research network. In addition, attending the advanced course in computer science was compulsory in addition to two other subjects from the natural, social or linguistic fields. In the following years, however, this regulation was abolished and so the advanced courses could be selected according to the general criteria for the Saarland. Only taking the IT subject was compulsory from grade 11 onwards in the form of the basic course.

Wind class

Since the 2008/2010 school year, the school has been offering extended music lessons for grades 5 and 6 in the form of a wind class, making it again one of the first schools in Saarland to offer such a range of subjects. Schoolchildren choose this option when entering grade 5. As part of this music lesson, they learn a wood or brass instrument in the form of group lessons, as well as registers and orchestral rehearsals.
