Gemeprost is a synthetically produced derivative of the naturally occurring tissue hormone prostaglandin E 1 and is used in gynecology .
application areas
Gemeprost is used topically in gynecology - for example in the form of vaginal suppositories - to soften and expand the cervix . This is used in preparation for diagnostic interventions such as endometrial biopsy and hysteroscopy , or in preparation for the insertion of an intrauterine device or other instrumental interventions on the uterine cavity . A suppository can induce dilation that lasts at least 6 hours.
In order to bring about an abortion , Gemeprost is used in the first trimester of pregnancy (i.e. up to the 12th week of pregnancy) in preparation for curettage or vacuum aspiration, among other things. In the second trimester it is used in combination with mifepristone for this purpose .
Gemeprost is also used to treat peripartum bleeding .
Comparison with misoprostol
Misoprostol costs less than Gemeprost and is more stable even at room temperature . Gemeprost should be stored frozen for up to half an hour before vaginal use. Some studies suggest that severe pain is more common after using Gemeprost than with misoprostol. Misoprostol is formulated for oral use, although it appears to be more effective when administered vaginally or sublingually.
