The Gemmileitung is a high-voltage line built by Bernische Kraftwerke (BKW) in the 1960s , which leads from Chippis in the canton of Valais over the Gemmi pass to the Bickigen substation near Burgdorf in the canton of Bern . The line, owned by Swissgrid since 2013 , brings the energy from the power plants in the canton of Valais to the consumption centers in the Swiss plateau .

history

At Schwarenbach to the south

At the beginning of the 1920s, the energy demand of the electrochemical industry in Valais declined. In March 1921, Alusuisse and BKW agreed to transfer 8 MW of power from the Chippis plant. The energy was urgently needed north of the Alps, especially in winter, in order to combat the shortage there. In the same summer, the first high-voltage line was built from Chippis over the Gemmipass to Kandersteg , which was operated with a voltage of 55 kV and supplied energy to the north from November 1921. In 1944/45 the line was designed for a transmission capacity of 50,000 kVA expanded at a voltage of 65 kV.

In 1964/65 the current Gemmileitung was built as the longest high-voltage line in Switzerland. It begins in the Creux-de-Chippis substation near Sierre in the canton of Valais, leads over the Gemmi pass and ends in the Bickigen substation in the municipality of Wynigen. The 106 km long line runs over 297 masts, 60 of which are in the canton of Valais and 237 in the canton of Bern. The six bundle conductors are designed for an electrical voltage of 380 kV, but are only operated at 220 kV. The rated current is 1920 A.

In 2014, Swissgrid presented a project to increase the voltage to 380 kV, whereby the rated current is reduced to 1500 A. Although the line was originally approved for this voltage, it has to be rebuilt due to changed legal provisions. The approval is expected for the end of 2019.

Continuing lines

Another high-voltage line leads from Bickigen to Laufenburg , where there is a connection to the European network . This line runs through the cantons of Bern, Solothurn, Basel-Landschaft and Aargau. A 380 kV line from Bassecourt is looped into the Bickigen-Laufenburg line on the Matzendörfer Stierenberg, southwest of the Schelten Pass.
