Catherine Filene Shouse (born June 9, 1896 in Boston , † December 14, 1994 in Washington ) was an American writer , suffragette and art patron .

biography

Catherine Filene was the daughter of Albert Lincoln Filene and his wife Therese geb. Because. Within the family she was called Kay. Between 1911 and 1913 she attended Bradford Academy and one year at Vassar College . She later studied philosophy and literature at Wheaton College and Radcliffe College . In 1921 she married the economist Alvin E. Dodd; the marriage resulted in a daughter. They divorced in 1929 and two years later she married former Kansas Congressman Jouett Shouse († 1968). Catherine Filene Shouse became the first woman to become a member of the Democratic National Committee (1925) and was editor of the Woman's National Democratic Committee's Bulletin from 1929 to 1932 . In 1929 Shouse founded the Institute of Women's Professional Relations to provide better or higher education for girls and women. Catherine Shouse served on the Official Commission on Women's Rights under Presidents John F. Kennedy , Richard Nixon , Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan .
