GENDER. Journal of Gender, Culture and Society is published three times a year peer review - journal , which emerged from a project of the "Network Gender Studies NRW" in 2009. The editors and editors are supported and advised by a scientific advisory board to which 54 scientists belong (as of February 2019).

Story and concept

The magazine was first published in 2009 by Ruth Becker, Heike Kahlert , Beate Kortendiek, Sigrid Metz-Göckel and Sabine Schäfer. The premiere issue comprised articles that reflected current theoretical and socio-political debates, in particular on family and gender equality policy as well as school and university education.

Since 2010, every issue of the magazine has had a thematic focus. In the period that followed, this included "Gender Relations in the Religions of the World" (1/10), "Gender Theory and Diversity Management" (2/10), "New Perspectives on Violence" (2/11) and "Gender & Art: Self-images and self-concepts in the arts ”(1/12). With the 1/18 issue, articles appear under the three headings focus, open part and reviews. The focal points are supervised by experts together with at least one editor of the journal. In addition, special issues appear at irregular intervals.

GENDER is a predominantly German-language specialist journal that also publishes articles in English. Since 2009, over 200 authors from different countries, e. B. USA, Sweden, Poland, Australia, Israel, Morocco, Egypt published international contributions. The transnationally shaped articles dealt with topics such as “Migration, Gender, Violence. Considerations on an intersectional concept of violence ”or“ Mobile scientists. Transnational Locations and Biographical Perspectives ”. The 1/17 issue contained a focus on Arab women and the transformation of Arab societies.
