Taguchi Gen'ichi

Taguchi Gen'ichi ( Japanese 田 口 玄 一 ; born January 1, 1924 in Tōkamachi ; † June 2, 2012 ) was a Japanese engineer, statistician and expert on quality improvement.

Due to the ever tougher competition in industrial production, the use of statistical procedures in quality assurance and quality engineering became more and more important. From the late 1940s, Taguchi developed the Taguchi method, named after him, for statistical test planning in order to minimize quality losses and to make the products and manufacturing processes more robust against interference. Ultimately, his method is about minimizing the costs that a product causes - not only for the manufacturer itself, but also for society in general.

The quality philosophy he developed is widely used in industrial practice. In 1995 he was awarded the Shewhart Medal for his work .
