Gennaro Pesce

Gennaro Pesce (born July 29, 1902 in Naples ; † January 8, 1984 ) was an Italian archaeologist who had made a name for himself above all for the exploration of Libya and Sardinia .

In 1927 he graduated from La Sapienza University in Rome with a degree in archeology with Giulio Emanuele Rizzo . He then worked at the Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene and came to Delos , Rhodes and Crete . From 1929 he worked for the archaeological preservation of monuments in Italy, first for the Soprintendenza of Naples, Avellino and Benevento, from 1933 for that of Reggio Calabria and from 1936 for that of Piedmont. In December 1938 he was transferred to Sardinia, shortly afterwards he worked in Libya from 1939 to 1949, where he excavated in Ptolemais and Cyrene . Since January 6, 1949 he was the head of the monument preservation of Sardinia (Soprintendente). Here he mainly dug in Nora and Tharros .
