Geoffrey de Beauchamp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Geoffrey de Beauchamp († after 1257) was an Anglo-Norman knight who served as a military and civil servant.

Geoffrey de Beauchamp came from the Beauchamp family , the most influential noble family in Bedfordshire . He was a younger son of Simon de Beauchamp and his wife Isabelle . His father died before 1207, after which Geoffrey's older brother William inherited the family's estates. As a younger son, Geoffrey inherited only small estates. Before 1234, he owned only half a Knight's Fee in Essex and Hertfordshire . However, his brother William had become administrator of the lands of Robert Daubeney of Cainhoe in Bedfordshire, he had also acquired the right to marry his heirs. Probably to provide for his brother, William married Daubeney's daughter Joan to Geoffrey around 1234 . As dowry, Joan brought properties with over eight Knight's fee into the marriage. However, she apparently died childless before 1241 when her dowry was shared among her siblings.

Geoffrey probably took part in the barons ' crusade led by Simon de Montfort and Richard of Cornwall in 1240 . During the war against the Welsh princes , he was a member of the English army in Wales in 1245. In 1248 he served in Gascony, which belonged to the English kings, in south-west France. As provost , as administrator of Bayonne , he asked King Henry III in 1253 . to come to Gascony in view of the tense situation. Indeed, in 1254, the king traveled to his southwestern French possessions. Obviously Geoffrey was still alive in 1257, after which he is no longer mentioned.
