The Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule (GCLS) in Ober-Ramstadt was named after the Göttingen scientist and philosopher Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742–1799). Founded the school in 1971 and offers the possibility of acquiring the main and secondary school completion (after the ninth or tenth grade), since 1996, the acquisition of General university (Abitur) at. It is one of the few comprehensive schools in the district that offers all school-leaving certificates from general schools.

organization

The school runs grades 5 to 13.

Since 1993 the school has had a gymnasiale Oberstufe (GOS), in which all admissible performance subjects are offered. The spectrum of possible course combinations is based on the Upper Level and Abitur Ordinance (OAVO). Within this structure, the pupils should be given intensive pedagogical support and encouraged in their individual development.

In grade 11 there is a social internship, in grade 12 there is a company internship. The pupils should look for an internship on their own initiative. The internships provide exemplary insights into social interaction as well as into professional and economic life. They also serve to test inclinations, skills and abilities.

The majority of the upper school students come from their own secondary school. In recent years, however, there has also been a strong influx from neighboring communities, which has resulted in the school having to reject registrations.

Subject offer

In grades 5 and 6 there are so-called " MINT classes " with a scientific focus. MINT stands for mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. The child's enthusiasm for scientific phenomena and technical issues should be used to promote and further develop a sustained interest in the natural sciences and technology.

In addition to the main subjects German, mathematics and English, great importance is attached to bilingual learning in foreign language classes. Therefore, students from grade 7 onwards choose French or Latin as a second foreign language or, alternatively, work apprenticeships . It is possible to include the subject in the Abitur if this subject was attended continuously at least in the upper school (11th-13th grade).

From year 9 you can choose a second elective subject. The subjects film, housekeeping, human biology , computer science , art, emergency medicine , sports mentors, theater, responsibility and zoology are offered here.

Architecture and buildings

The Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule was renovated as a flagship project in an innovative, sustainable and energetic way as part of a model project by the German Energy Agency (dena). The school received a new building envelope, an efficient building technology. The energetic standard falls below the requirements of the heat protection ordinance 2007 by 40%. With new openings in the ceiling and roof, a two-storey, roofed atrium was created in the previously windowless hall , which brings light and air into the center of the building, enables optical connections between the floors, significantly shortens walking distances and ensures smoke extraction from the hall in the event of a fire. A new, highly insulated facade construction avoids thermal bridges and improves the natural lighting of the building.

The renovation of the old main building began in early 2010. The werk.um architekten GbR in Darmstadt was selected for the architecture. Three-storey pavilions with a total of 24 classrooms were built so that lessons could continue without disruption. The renovation took three years to complete and was put at just under 12 million euros. The main building was brought up to a low-energy house standard .

On behalf of the city of Ober-Ramstadt the LEAF GmbH planned a school sports and training facility as Kampfbahn Type C for Georg Christoph Lichtenberg School. In addition, the planning law principles in the form of a land use plan, development plan and an intervention compensation plan were developed in advance. The area previously used as arable land was developed infrastructurally. The complete drainage and power lines including an underground water reservoir as a retention area and the supply for a future club building were taken into account in the planning. The original sloping terrain was terraced, with around 40,000 m³ of soil being moved and hydraulically consolidated. The planned arena type C consists of a 4 × 400 m circular track with a 6 × 100/110 m short-distance track. The large playing field consists of artificial turf with a quartz sand filling. In addition to two long jump pits, a shot put training facility, a high jump facility and a separate javelin throw facility, a volleyball field and a basketball field were also planned. The sports facility was fenced in on all sides with a steel mesh fence and is accessible via three large gate systems. The entire area was greened with trees and bushes and thus fits seamlessly into the landscape.

Cooperations

In 2017, GCLS coordinated an Erasmus + project for the first time . Since then there have been student exchange programs with schools from Greece, Italy and Romania every year.

Other special features

The Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Schule has been recognized as a MINT-friendly school in 2015 by the initiative “Creating MINT Future”, which is under the patronage of the Conference of Ministers of Education.

On November 14, 2018, GCLS was awarded the 2018 Prevention Prize for its addiction prevention concept.
