Georg Birgelen (* 1955 ) is a German diplomat .

Life

Birgelen studied business administration and received his doctorate in 1980. Then he went to the foreign service . From 1982 Birgelen worked at the German Embassy in Jakarta , Indonesia . From 1985 to 1988 he was employed in the Foreign Office , after which he was permanent representative at the German Embassy in Panama . In 1990 he moved to the permanent representation to the EU in Brussels . From 1993 to 1998 he worked as deputy head of department at the Federal Chancellery . In 1999 Birgelen went to Ottawa as an exchange officer, after which he was permanent representative of the Federal Republic of Germany in Canada from 2000 to 2003 . In the following years he was reinstated in the Foreign Office, where he worked, among other things, as a department head. In 2011 he went to the German Embassy in Moscow as a permanent representative . As a result, Birgelen was consul general in Istanbul from 2015 . From 2018 to 2020 he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Beirut , Lebanon .

Birgelen is married and has four children.
