Georg Elieser Edzard

Georg Elieser Edzard (also Edzardus) (born January 22, 1661 in Hamburg ; † June 24, 1737 ) was a German Lutheran theologian , orientalist and missionary .

Life

Edzard was the second son of the Hamburg activist of the Jewish mission , Esdras Edzardus . He attended the Johanneum and the Academic Gymnasium in Hamburg. He studied theology from 1681 to 1684 at the following universities: Giessen , Frankfurt am Main and Heidelberg . After that he was in Hamburg for a short time a candidate for the Ministry of Spiritual Affairs , that is, a candidate for a pastor's position, and in 1685 was appointed professor of history and the Greek language at the grammar school. In 1717 he took over the professorship for oriental languages instead .

In addition, like his brother Sebastian Edzard , who was also a professor at the grammar school, he was active in the Jewish mission. In this context, he wrote two works with notes on topics of the Talmud , on blessings and on the mixed natractic Avoda sara , which deals with idolatry . After the subtitle, the preface to this work should “show the use of this chapter against the Jews” ( qua usus Capitis hujus contra Judæos ostenditur ).
