Georg Heinrich Bode (born October 18, 1802 in Northeim , † June 26, 1846 in Göttingen ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Georg Heinrich Bode attended the Corvinianum high school in Northeim and from 1820 studied philology at the University of Göttingen . In 1823 he won the philosophical faculty prize for a work on Orphic poetry , which was printed the following year. With his doctorate (on April 3, 1824) he also acquired the venia legendi in classical philology.

After graduating, Bode first worked for a year as a teacher of ancient languages and French and then went to Northampton in Massachusetts as a lecturer in ancient languages . After three years he returned to Göttingen, where he was appointed as an assessor in the philosophy faculty and as an accessist at the university library.

The position of the assessor was - similar to the private lecturer - intended as a transit station before the professorship. Nevertheless, Bode did not receive a call to a foreign university. He remained in the same position in Göttingen until his death at the age of 43.

His literary production during this time was extensive: he published an annotated edition of the Mythographi Vaticani (Celle 1834), which Angelo Mai had discovered in Rome a few years earlier and published for the first time. Bode provided the text in the first volume of his edition and an extensive commentary in the second volume. In addition, he prepared his main work: The History of Hellenic Poetry , which was initially calculated in two volumes and Greek literature from its beginnings to the 4th century BC. Chr. Included. The first two volumes appeared in three parts in 1838 and dealt with the Greek epic as well as the Ionic, Doric and Aeolian poetry. In 1839 and 1840 Bode had another volume in two parts, in which he treated the Greek tragedy, the satyr play and the comedy (with the exception of the new comedy).
