Georg Heinrich Macheleid (born October 16, 1723 in Cursdorf ; † March 7, 1801 in Schwarzburg ) was a Thuringian manufacturer. He is considered to be one of the post-inventors of porcelain and is the founder of the Aeltesten Volkstedter porcelain manufactory .

Life

Macheleid was born the son of a carpenter and later laboratory assistant and grew up in the Thuringian Forest . He studied theology in Jena , but already showed great interest in science during this time. After completing his studies, he worked as a priest in the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt for a few years . However, around 1755 he gave up this office and devoted himself entirely to the work of the arcanists Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus and Johann Friedrich Böttger . Through systematic experiments with various clays, he finally succeeded in discovering the method for making porcelain himself in 1757.

After Prince Johann Friedrich from Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt had given him the privilege to do so at his request, Macheleid founded a porcelain factory in Sitzendorf in 1760 , which, however , was relocated to Volkstedt in 1762 . Macheleid himself withdrew from the company in 1764. Prince Johann Friedrich granted him a lifelong pension.
