Georg Hinz
Johann Georg Hinz (* around 1630 in Altona ; † 1688 in Hamburg ), who also signed as Hainz , Heintz or Hintz , was a German painter and the first specialist in still life in Hamburg .
life and work
Little is known about his life. Presumably he had been in Hamburg since the beginning of the 1660s; there he acquired citizenship in 1668 and became a free master in 1681 .
Hinz is considered the first and most important Hamburg still life painter; since his work shows that he knew the Dutch still lifes very well, it is believed that he had visited Amsterdam and Haarlem . From his hand came fruit and splendid still lifes, banquetjes, pieces of flowers and trompe-l'oeils .
A breakfast still life
The breakfast still life by Hinz is similar to the Haarlemer Banketjes (= small meals, breakfasts), details such as B. the cheese with the faience plate or the folded tablecloth are reminiscent of the paintings by Pieter Claesz or Floris van Schooten. The meal, sparse at first glance, points beyond itself in the sense of the baroque legibility of the still life : it shows the typical dishes from Lent; the fish, the opened pretzel and the cut onion are symbols for the Passion time and thus indirectly for Jesus Christ .
The treasure cupboard
Among other things, Hinz made the painting Cabinet of Treasures in 1666 , which nowadays is sometimes also titled Kunstkammer cabinet. This art chamber cabinet keeps rare pieces of various origins, such as those collected by wealthy lovers of rarities since the Renaissance. The Danish King Christian IV is depicted on the medallion ; the ivory cup belongs to a Danish collection and is now on loan at the Hamburg Museum of Art and Industry . The painting itself was donated to the Kunsthalle by Pius Warburg in 1890. There is a later variant of this picture, a treasure cupboard. Shelf with pistols showing the ivory goblet from another side; all other pieces on the shelf have been exchanged. This work can be found in the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin .
