Georg Laskaris

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Laskaris ( Middle Greek Γεώργιος Λάσκαρις ; † before 1236) was an older brother of the Byzantine exile emperor Theodor I. Laskaris .

Life

Georg was one of at least six brothers of Theodor Laskaris who, after the fall of Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade, founded the Nikaia Empire as the successor state to the Byzantine Empire. After Theodor's coronation as emperor in March 1208 (or already in 1207) in Nikaia , Georg, like Alexios and Isaak Laskaris , was awarded the high court dignity of sebastokrator (vice-emperor), which was reserved for close relatives of the incumbent emperor. In 1211 Georg Laskaris was employed by his brother as a hegemon (troop commander) in the Smyrna area on the subject of Thrakesion . Otherwise little is known about his life. His date of death is to be set before 1236.
