Georg Müller (mineralogist)

Hermann Friedrich Georg Müller (born October 1, 1930 in Luckau ) is a German mineralogist. He is professor emeritus of mineralogy , petrography and reservoir science . 1986 to 1988 and 1990 to 1992 he was rector of the Clausthal University of Technology .

Life

Müller did not return until 1955 from Soviet captivity, into which he had got caught as a member of the Hitler Youth in the defensive battles around Berlin in the last days of the war. In 1957 he passed the special maturity examination, studied mineralogy at the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate there in 1962 . After setting up a mineralogical preparation laboratory for nuclear physical age determination of minerals and rocks in the Federal Institute for Soil Research , he moved to the Mineralogical-Petrographic Institute of the University of Kiel in 1965 and completed his habilitation there in 1966 with a study on auto- metasomatic processes in granites . From Kiel he began a geological-petrological study of the Boknfjord area and that of Indre Ryfylke in south-west Norway over two decades with colleagues, doctoral and diploma students .

In 1970, Müller accepted a full chair for mineralogy, petrography and deposit science at the Technical University of Clausthal and was appointed director of the mineralogical institute there. From 1973 he opened a second large research area for himself and his staff in Minas Gerais ( Brazil ), where he worked with his staff, Brazilian and German doctoral and graduate students, questions about the iron ore deposits there and their general problems for two decades. In addition, he has worked as a reviewer or supervisor for doctoral students in many countries. At the end of the winter semester 1995/96 he was retired.

Publications

He is the author of several specialist books that have also been translated into foreign languages ​​and of more than 100 specialist publications. The textbook “Methods of Thin Section Microscopy”, together with Michael Raith, reached five editions and was translated into Turkish, Portuguese and Danish. Academic offices

Müller has held numerous academic offices, including twice that of Vice-Rector and Rector of the Clausthal University of Technology (1985–1993). From 1994 to 1996 he was Vice Rector for Studies and Teaching. Müller is a member of several national and international scientific societies and serves the German Research Foundation as a specialist reviewer for geoscientific research in Latin America and as a liaison professor at the Clausthal University of Technology.

Honors

In 1980, Müller was appointed as a full member of the math and science class of the Braunschweig Scientific Society . In 1995 the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg awarded him the academic degree and the dignity of Dr. rer. nat. hc In 2002 the Clausthal University of Technology and in 2003 the partner university of Ljubljana awarded him the title of Honorary Senator. In December 2002 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
