Georg M. Fangauer

Georg Michael Fangauer OSFS (born March 25, 1887 in Egglfing (Köfering) , † August 26, 1956 in Duncan , Oklahoma ) was a Catholic religious.

origin

Fangauer came from a large Christian family from Egglfing in the Köfering district. His parents were Michael and Maria Fangauer (née Wankerl). Six of the 11 children entered a religious community:

  • Brother Barnabas Fangauer (* 1876 as Michael Fangauer), monastery gardener in St. Ottilien
  • Sister Blasia Fangauer (1879–1960), Merciful Sister of St. Vincent von Paul , Superior in the Jesuheim in Oberlochau, Bregenz
  • Brother Paschalis Fangauer (1882 as Johann Baptist Fangauer - 1950), missionary and martyr in Tokwon
  • Sister Melissa Fangauer (1883–1957), superior in the home for the blind in Innsbruck and Zams
  • Sister Ermenfrieda Fangauer (1893–1977), superior in the Waldsassen children's home

Act

Georg Fangauer studied philosophy and theology at the University of Vienna and graduated with a Dr. philosophy and theology. After his ordination he celebrated Primiz in his home parish Egglfing in 1910 and has been a priest ever since. In 1925, Fangauer was appointed Provincial of the Oblates of St. Franz von Sales of the Austro-South German Province. He held this office until 1937. During this time, Fangauer and Father Martin Hartmann built a province of the religious community in Switzerland. In 1933 he acquired a house in Lucerne, in 1936 a study house in Düdingen near Friborg and in 1937 the Großhof in Kriens near Lucerne, which from then on served as the founding headquarters.

After the Nazi invasion of Austria , Fangauer emigrated to St. Louis in 1938 and finally to Duncan (Oklahoma) in 1939, where he worked as a pastor. There he built the "Sacred Heart School" in 1946. While 28 kindergarten children and 20 first graders were looked after by two teachers in the first year, the school had to be expanded to include a cafeteria, an auditorium and additional classrooms just four years later due to the enormous influx of students, and two more teachers had to be employed. In addition, Georg Fangauer built the St. Garvey founded in 1921 and closed in 1924 due to a lack of students. Joan of Arc Catholic School ”. In addition, he founded a poor house, a community hall and a monastery and from 1952 worked as a professor of moral theology and canon law in Shawnee .

The Father George Fangauer Council (Knights of Columbus) is still operated in his honor.

Fangauer died on August 26, 1956 and was buried in Duncan Municipal Cemetery.
