Georg Matthes (born August 20, 1942 in Düsseldorf ) is a German manga artist, television producer and photographer .

Life

In 1970 he married Kazue Kakinuma from Japan, where he moved to Tokyo in 1972 .

Here he became a student of Ishinomori Shotaro , a Japanese comic book master. He was the first foreigner to come to Japan to learn manga drawing. After just 6 months, the first order for a previously unknown form of comics was placed in Japan. Since then, Matthes has published his manga for decades in the largest Japanese daily newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun .

Her first roles in Japanese television, dramas and films followed. He was a frequent guest on Japanese television shows and was often seen as a talk partner. He appeared regularly on Fuji TV Channel 8 for six years. He became known in Germany for his sensitive theater and choreography photos. For several years he has also devoted himself to abstract photography.

In 1982 he organized the 1st German Film Festival in Japan with the support of the German Ministry of Economic Affairs, under the patronage of the German Embassy in Tokyo, in the cities of Tokyo and Osaka . The directors Helma Sanders-Brahms , Wim Wenders and Werner Herzog were involved here. The success of the film festival brought him the nomination as "Representative of the German Film Industry" in the Far East. This was followed by coordination for co-productions and own participation in films and productions in Japan.

Today Matthes lives alternately in Germany and Japan and also teaches manga drawing in Germany.

Quote

“At night, Georg Matthes photographs the glowing Tokyo from a moving car. He pans the camera, uses it like a paintbrush, uses long exposure to capture the bright signals from the metropolis. (...) His spectacular recordings are reminiscent of the choreography of the theater photos. But because they have moved far away from the object, they can develop an independent existence. "
