Georg Rattel

Georg Rattel (born April 29, 1882 in Hof , † February 14, 1950 in Bamberg ) was a Franconian local politician . As a member of the Bavarian People's Party , he was a long-time member of the Bamberg City Council and served as honorary mayor from 1919 to 1924 .

Life

Georg Rattel came to Bamberg when his parents were three years old. During his studies, he joined the Catholic Student Association Rhaetia at.

In 1911 he was appointed to the community college of Bamberg as a member of the Center Citizens' Association, which he held for eight years. During the First World War he was head of a care station for jaw injuries and was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class and the Bavarian Order of Military Merit 4th class with swords.

In 1919 he became a member of the city council and chairman of the parliamentary group of the Bavarian People's Party. He served as honorary mayor from 1919 to 1924.

In 1933, at the age of 49, Georg Rattel received his doctorate in dental science from the University of Erlangen and was considered an excellent specialist. He lost his city council function with the beginning of the “Third Reich”. During these twelve years he was under the surveillance of the Gestapo and was taken into “ protective custody ” for several weeks in 1933 and 1944 . On July 5, 1938, he had to answer to his boss Georg Meixner and two other employees of the Bamberger Volksblatt in a process that was only understandable from the time, due to the bankruptcy of the Christian publishing house.

On September 16, 1945 he was one of the founding members and program managers of the CSU association in Bamberg and Upper Franconia. In 1946, Rattel was re-elected as a city councilor and was the leader of the Christian Social Union .

Georg Rattel died as a result of a stroke. At his grave, the then Mayor Luitpold Weegmann said goodbye with the words: “All of Bamberg mourns this most loyal of his sons, who has rendered his hometown the most self-sacrificing service for decades.” Others emphasized his high level of commitment at the political and church level.
