Georg Rhete

Georg Rhete (also Georg Rhete the Elder to distinguish it from his grandson of the same name ; origin unknown; † February 15, 1586 in Stettin ) was a German Lutheran theologian and printer . He was one of the first two book printers in Szczecin in the 16th century.

Life and accomplishments

Georg Rhete studied in Frankfurt (Oder) and was from 1573 subdeacon and sexton at St. Mary's Church in Szczecin . From 1581 until his death he held the office of pastor at the Peter and Paul Church . He was married to Anna Ramelow, a mayor's daughter from Treptow .

According to one tradition, he and Andreas Kellner († 1591) set up the first printing press in Szczecin in 1569 , according to another tradition he did not begin his business until 1577. The first known printing Rhetes dates from 1577, it was a booklet about comets . In addition, Rhete produced calendars in particular. Georg Rhete died a few years after opening his print shop. According to the funeral sermon of his son Joachim, Georg Rhete taught himself the printing trade.

After Georg Rhete's death, the printing company was continued by his heirs, first by his son Joachim Rhete (1566–1611). After a few changes of ownership, the business was transferred to Franz Hessenland in 1829 , who continued to run it under his name and published the Ostseezeitung from 1835 . Georg Rhete the Younger (1600–1647), son of Joachim Rhete, worked as a printer and publisher in Gdansk.
