Andreas Kellner (* unknown; † 1591 ; also Andreas Kelner ) was a German printer . He was the first book printer in Szczecin in the 16th century.

Life and accomplishments

When and where Andreas Kellner was born is unknown. He was the son-in-law of Johann Eichorn (1524–1583), who had been a printer in Frankfurt an der Oder since 1547 . When in 1569 the Pomeranian Duke Barnim IX. gave Johann Eichhorn an appointment as a printer in Stettin, Andreas Kellner went to Stettin and built a printing company there. He initially ran it for his father-in-law and then took it over himself in 1572. According to tradition, Andreas Kellner is said to have worked together with Georg Rhete , who can be verified as the second printer in Szczecin from 1577 onwards.

The works printed by Kellner in Stettin include a hymn book in Low German, psalms, Geistlike Lede and Gesenge (1576), and the first Pomeranian church ordinance and agende (1591). According to the judgment of the historian Martin Wehrmann, the small catechism of Luther (1574) and dat nye Testament (1576) technically stand out among the works printed by Kellner .

From 1586 to 1591, Andreas Kellner was a member of the municipal authorities in Szczecin. He died in 1591.

printing house

After the death of Andreas Kellner, the printing company was continued by his heirs, first by his widow Margarethe and then by his son Samuel Kellner († 1622). After a few changes of ownership, the business closed in 1700.
