from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Schöbel (born October 10, 1860 in Berlin ; † around 1930 there ) was an illustrator and history painter in Berlin.

Life

Schöbel came from a family of merchants and after finishing school he learned this profession at the request of his family. At the age of 24, Schöbel began to study at the Berlin Academy of the Arts in 1884 .

But after a short time he left the academy and acquired his artistry mostly self- taught. He was very strongly influenced by Paul Meyerheim (1842–1915) and Adolph Menzel (1815–1905).

He specialized in scenes from the life of Frederick the Great , but with the beginning of World War I from 1914 onwards he painted numerous paintings with patriotic depictions from fighting on the Western Front. In contrast, he is also known as an illustrator of children's books. In 1904 he received a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition .

Even today, many of his pictures can be found at auctions and in galleries.
