Georg Schönweiß

Georg Schönweiß (born January 29, 1889 in Elpersdorf near Ansbach ; † August 12, 1963 in Nuremberg ) was head of the city mission in Nuremberg.

life and work

He was the son of the farmer Michael Johann Schönweiß and Eva Margaretha née Kramer in Elpersdorf.

Pastor Schönweiß re-established the station mission in Nuremberg. In 1922 he founded the Christian Working Group Nuremberg. He was the first pastor of the large city parish of Nürnberg-Lichtenhof, founded in 1923, and initiated the construction of the Gustav Adolf Church and the Luther Church . In the years 1927-1936 five homes were opened in which socially disadvantaged parishioners were cared for. In 1946 he founded the Federation for a Living Church (later Protestant Work). In 1958 a settlement with 174 apartments was built under his care on the Hasenbuck .

He was honored for his services with the Federal Cross of Merit and the honorary citizenship of the Elpersdorf community. A street in Nuremberg-Lichtenhof bears his name.
