Georg Stilke (born October 14, 1840 in Düsseldorf , † November 4, 1900 in Berlin ) was a German publisher and train station bookseller .

Life

Georg Stilke was born in Düsseldorf as the son of the painter Hermann Stilke and the illustrator and painter Hermine Stilke .

Stilke began as an apprentice in the F. Schneider & Co. shop in Berlin, which he bought at the age of 22.

In 1869 Stilke teamed up with Schäfer-Voit to publish and publish the well-known fashion newspaper Der Bazar . In its editorial office, Stilke got to know the writer Paul Lindau . Together they founded the popular magazine Die Gegenwart (1872–1891) in 1872 . Stilke also founded the monthly magazine Nord und Süd (1877–1904) together with Lindau and published the magazine Die Zukunft from 1892 in collaboration with Maximilian Harden . Four years later, Stilke took over the publishing house of the Prussian Yearbooks . In addition to the magazines mentioned, Stilke has published a number of valuable books and works of art.

In 1882 Stilke founded a new line of business with the station trade. Initially, his company sold daily newspapers and "easy reading" at the stations of the Berlin Stadtbahn , from 1894 also at all other stations in Berlin. From 1891, Stilke opened other station bookshops in Hamburg and at the stations of the Hamburg / Altona line.

Georg Stilke died in Berlin in 1900 at the age of 60 and, like his father before, was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . Both graves have not been preserved.

In 1900, his son Hermann Stilke (1870–1928) took over the business and expanded it continuously. After Hermann Stilke's death, his son Georg H. Stilke (1904–1974) became the sole owner of the company, expanded it by buying up the Nicolaische Buchhandlung and rebuilt it after the Second World War. From 1947 to 1958 he was chairman of the Association of German Train Station Booksellers. At the beginning of the 1970s, the Stilke Group realized around 50% of total train station book sales (€ 82.4 million).
