Georg Thomas (railway worker)

Georg Thomas (* 1826 in Frankfurt / Main ; † March 22, 1883 in Mainz ) was a German engineer .

After completing his studies, he worked for a long time as a designer in various large machine works and railway offices.

In 1856 he was appointed by the board of directors of the Hessian Ludwigsbahn as the first machine foreman to Mainz at the Centrale locomotive repair workshop of the Hessian Ludwigs-Eisenbahn and was in charge of the entire machine, wagon and workshop administration of the railway company. The Hessische Ludwigsbahn honored his lively technical activity and his outstanding commitment by appointing Thomas to its 'Specialdirection' in 1876. There he worked mainly on the development of new operating equipment until his death in 1883.

He became particularly well-known in his time for the development of the "Thomas' steam car" named after him . This vehicle was the connection of a fixed with a double-deck coaches connected steam locomotive . Thomas had the invention patented in 1881. In 1882 the 'Prämiirungscommission' of the Association of German Railway Administrations awarded him a prize for this steam powered rail car.

In addition to his professional activity, he was also chairman of the Frankfurt district association of German engineers .
