Georg Warda , Syriac Giwargis Warda was a Syrian hymn poet of the 13th century.

Life

Warda (German: "the rose") came from Arabella (today Irbid ) and lived in the Levant during the time of the Mongol storms . Allegedly he worked as a metropolitan in Arabella and Mosul . He was a major poet of the Syrian Renaissance of the 12th and 13th centuries. Several of his poems and hymns have been incorporated into the liturgy of the Christian Orient .

The metaphor of the rose ( Syriac "Warda") refers to the beauty of the hymns. They are reminiscent of the Persian poetry in the collection of poems Golestan by the Persian poet Saadi from Shiraz . Around 150 handwritten poems were attributed to Georg Warda. 35 of them have been published so far. There are hymns for various annual festivals, hymns of praise to saints and martyrs, and exhortations for repentance. The most famous work is The Book of the Rose (Kthava d-warda). Several hymns and lamentations commemorate historical events such as the drought and famine in northern Mesopotamia in the years 1223–1224 and epidemics. A poem addresses the Mongolian raids that struck the region from 1235–1236.
