Georg Winckler (theologian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Winckler (* in Bischofswerda ; † April 23, 1527 in Spessart ) was a German reformer.

Live and act

Georg Winckler came from Goldbach in the Bohemian Upper Lusatia . He was initially chaplain or court preacher to Cardinal Archbishop Albrecht and was appointed by him as preacher of the collegiate church in Halle in 1523 . As such, Winkler supported the teachings and church reformation efforts of Martin Luther .

After he had introduced the community supper in his church in Halle in 1527, he was called to the Archbishop of Magdeburg and Mainz, Cardinal Albrecht, at the instigation of one of his former fellow clergymen, Canon Konrad Hoffmann, to justify himself. The Cardinal Archbishop Albrecht was then in the royal seat of Aschaffenburg am Main. On the way back from there, Georg Winckler was murdered in a forest on April 23, 1527. The main instigator of this act of violence was generally referred to as Canon Hoffmann, who was even suspected of having carried out the murder with his own hand.

Honors

Martin Luther dedicated his consolation to Georg Winckler to the Christians in Halle about Mr. Georgen, their preacher, death .

Cardinal Archbishop Albrecht, who felt hurt by this portrayal of Luther, let him know that he had unjustly suspected him. Regardless of this, Luther replied that although he himself had thought of not bringing the archbishop into connection with the matter, Georg Winckler had appeared in obedience to the archbishop's orders and was killed in the process. The archbishop could not prove his innocence better than if he punished the murderers.
