The George Grosz-Platz is a public course on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin-Charlottenburg . The street that crosses it is Schlüterstraße, and the square is opposite the Cumberland house .

history

For a long time the square did not get beyond its use as a traffic island and in the late 1990s it was partly neglected. It was named in 1986 after the German-American painter , graphic artist and caricaturist George Grosz .

The renovation work began in 2010. The cross-connection road between Kurfürstendamm and Schlüterstrasse was closed. This gave the cafes more space for chairs and noticeably increased the quality of stay in the square. The renovation was sponsored by the energy company Vattenfall , who in return built a transformer station on the square that was artistically clad with a shell. The original concepts were worked out by the artist Hella de Santarossa, who also designed the blue obelisk on Theodor-Heuss-Platz . However, the plans were discarded and Vattenfall provided a special design concept. The opening took place in July 2010 and was accompanied by, among others, George Grosz's great niece, Ana Fonell.

On December 7, 2012, the City Councilor of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf , Marc Schulte, together with Heidi Hetzer and the daughter-in-law of George Grosz, Lilian Grosz, unveiled a decorative sign donated by Heidi Hetzer.
