George Ackerley (born May 21, 1887 in West Derby , Liverpool , † 1958 ) was an English football player . The left half- forward played two games for Leeds City in the Second Division as an amateur in 1910 .

Career

Ackerley was registered as an amateur at Liverpool FC for the Football League from 1908 , but was not used in the first team. In March 1910 he joined the second division Leeds City and came for the reserve team in the Midland League to missions. After some good performances, he made his debut on March 17 for the first team in a 1-1 draw against Barnsley FC on the position of the left half- forward , where he replaced Jimmy Gemmell and together with Fred Croot formed the left attacking wing. The Yorkshire Post correspondent assessed his performance as follows: "He has a good knowledge of the game, but he needs time to build his body and gain confidence and energy before he is worth a place in second division football."

After the game he played again for the reserve team and appeared as a penalty taker before he was called up again in the first team on April 23 in a 3-0 defeat in front of 15,000 spectators at Manchester City . The Athletic News correspondent reported on Ackerley's performance: “A lean young player named Ackerley made his second appearance of the season on the half-left, and I was quite pleased with his performance because although he was slow and weak, he showed very good footwork and skill can be developed into a very useful man in my opinion. ”Ackerley was also registered as an amateur at Leeds City for the following season, but he did not get any further assignments. In 1911 Ackerley lived with his mother and five siblings in Liverpool and worked as a salesman for a fruit dealer. Ackerley's other football activities are not recorded.
