George Anson (* 1769 - November 4, 1849 in Chelsea ) was a British politician, member of the English parliament and general. He commanded a British cavalry brigade under the Duke of Wellington during the Iberian War and was a member of the British House of Commons for many years .

Anson was the second son of George Anson (formerly Adams) and his wife Mary Vernon, daughter of George Venables-Vernon, 1st Baron Vernon . Admiral George Anson, 1st Baron Anson , was his uncle and Thomas Anson, 1st Viscount Anson , was his older brother. He was also the uncle of Thomas Anson, 1st Earl of Lichfield , George Anson (who later was Supreme Commander in India) and of George Edward Anson , Keeper of the Privy Purse , who died a few days before him.

Life

Military career

Anson joined the British Army in 1786 and served under the Duke of York and Albany and Sir Ralph Abercromby in Holland . During this war he gained a good reputation. He served in all important campaigns between 1809 and 1813 and was honored with the command of the 16th Light Dragoons in the 2nd Battle of Porto. His reputation was further enhanced by his command of the light brigade of cavalry in the Battle of Talavera , the Battle of Busaco , the Battle of Salamanca and the Battle of Vitoria . He also fought in the battle of Venta del Pozo during the retreat from the siege of Burgos. For his services in the battles of Talavera, Salamanca and Vitoria, he received a medal and two clips. He became so famous during this campaign that the British House of Commons expressly thanked him in November 1816 for his service during the war. In February 1827 he was named colonel of the 4th Dragoon Guards and later a general.

Civil career

In addition to his military career, he was a member of the British Parliament from 1806 to 1841 for Lichfield . He was also Groom of the Bedchamber for Prince Albert from 1836 to September 1841 . In 1846 he was appointed lieutenant-governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea , to whose director (governor) he was appointed in May 1849.

Marriage and family

Anson married in 1800. His wife, Frances, was the daughter of John William Hamilton and the sister of Sir Frederick Hamilton. They had six sons and five daughters. Her son Talavera Vernon Anson became an admiral in the Royal Navy . Lady Anson died in 1834. Anson survived her by 15 years and died at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea in November 1849.
